The Miami photographer, Mademoiselle Coco, the Dallas truck driver and basically everyone, has his/her own black moment. In the world of women, black seems to be a universal panacea and is the only color (or non-color) subjected to prejudice. It makes you look thinner and it’s always elegant. You can wear and combine it with anything you want. It suits everyone… perfect for the blondes, the brunettes and redheads. And it easily goes as an outfit for the daily activities, weekend clubbing and stay-at-home evenings. Also, it seems like there is no such thing as enough black pants. The first expensive bag must be black and the little black dress is never wrong….
Women rely too much on black. Once you become accustomed to it, it is really difficult to replace the dark color. When shopping, you’ll gravitate towards black, without actually putting any effort in the process. In the first place, you’ll pick the main black piece and then the rest of the outfit. There is nothing dramatic or sad about having seven identical black pants or five similar black dresses, but that’s not the key to a versatile wardrobe. You simply cannot update your image and contour your style through the same color (of course, unless you’re planning to be known as ‘the woman in black’ or the “ the dark knight’).
Sure, black is chic and elegant, but most of the everyday wear is not that sophisticated and special. These clothes basically have no details and no creativity, they’re just ordinary.
You can treat the black addiction easily. Not by total abstinence, but by understanding that black should not be suddenly abandoned. Instead, it can be gracefully replaced with other neutral shades. Taste other colors that can beautify your look, choose carefully different combinations and get out of that ‘shaded’ comfort zone. And to those who prefer to live forever with the all-black wardrobe, for practical reasons, here’s an advice: learn to be creative. Find your inner Picasso and let it play with the beautiful colors our life is all about. Do not limit yourself to an outfit created totally out of black pieces. How much more boring can you get?
Take a look at the looks below that incorporate black but also some fun colours. You could also try sticking with your comfortable black skirt and then add a fun top in a bright colour or an off white. This will help make a easy and fun transition. Fashion is all about having fun so don’t be afraid to try something new once in a while.
My closet is definitely filled with neutrals, and I only recently started incorporating some colour into my wardrobe. The easiest way for me to ‘ease out’ of my comfort zone has been with some accent accessories!
I love wearing black for a night out; it feels very elegant, but I’m not stuck in the black rut. I have tons of colour in my wardrobe!
