Cheerios is celebrating the happiness and joy that connections bring to our lives in their newest campaign, “the Cheerios Effect.” I was asked to think of a connection story that was dear to my heart and create a Cheerios Effect video and share it with you guys!
There were a few stories that came to my mind but one that stood out was meeting my roommates during University. Some of you might know, but I moved to Australia by myself, to attend Griffith University. I’m still not sure how I moved across the world by myself, but I did. After a 24-hour plus flight, I arrived at my new student complex and was completely lost. I remember walking into my complex, seeing a post-it stuck to my bedroom door from my new roommate. It said that she was sorry she was at work but was excited to meet me and show me around. As little as the gesture was it made me feel a million times better. At that time in my life, I had never lived away from home and being in a new country I had no idea where to find anything.
Not only did I find an amazing roommate, but was lucky to find another great friend living across the hall from me. I remember her running into my place and being so excited that a Canadian had moved in. My favourite moment was the first time she heard me say ‘eh’ and she screamed in excitement, “OMG, you guys actually say eh!”
As small as these memories/experiences may seem they are some that have stuck with me. Sometimes it’s the small things that you do for people who count and stick out the most. Although I haven’t seen either of them in a long time, we chat when we can and I know we will always be there for each other.
You can check out my video here and Cheerios wants to give you the opportunity to share a personal connection story, whether it’s about your best friend, a neighbour, a significant other, or a pet.
To Win: Create your own personalized “connection story” video on CheeriosEffect.ca and tweet me (@nellecreations) the link using the hashtag #CheeriosEffect. Also be sure to leave a comment below with your video name so I can make sure I watch it and so you have a chance to win the prize!

The Cheerios Effect is a real scientific principle that is nicknamed after the cereal, and it’s about the fact that if you drop two Cheerios into a bowl, they’ll always eventually float together and connect. Just like those two tiny, floaty little Os, we’re all drawn together. In fact, we’re hard-wired to connect with those around us. Nothing could be more natural. And no matter who you are, where you live, or who you choose to share your life with, Cheerios believes that everyone is worthy of love and connection. This idea is summed up in the campaign tagline: “We all love to connect. That’s the Cheerios Effect.”
