Have you ever wondered what the Difference Between Plaid and Tartan is? I was wondering this for so long that I decided to make a quick blog post about it to help everybody out!
Difference Between Plaid and Tartan
With the holidays coming up I keep seeing Plaid and Tartan show up everyone and as much as I love fashion and try to keep up on all the latest trends, I couldn’t help but wonder what is the difference between Plaid and Tarten? If I was asking myself this, there must be others!
Tartan is a pattern that consists of horizontal criss crosses and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartan started in Scotland to designate a distinctive clan. Only very few true Tartan patterns exist today.
Plaid is any cloth that has the tartan pattern on it. Another definition of plaid is rectangular length of tartan worn over the left shoulder as part of the Scottish national costume.
Verdict:
Plaid is the fabric and the pattern is called Tartan.
Seems my European blogger friends refer to it as tartan more often. I don’t hear it being called tartan as much in the US!
